Mindful Knitting - Session - Future - Strengthening and Deepening
Date: Sunday March 12
Time: 2:00-3:30pm Central Time
Instructor: Fiona Ellis
KNITTING AS A MINDFULNESS PRACTISE – suitable for all levels “Mindfulness is a type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment” – Mayo Clinic. In these sessions Fiona will draw on her knowledge as both a knitwear designer and a yoga instructor. She will lead you in a series of knitting exercises and discussions devised to bring you to a point of mindfulness as you stitch, adding more awareness to the practice of knitting and deepening your skills to enhance the relaxation aspect of the craft. Participants will be invited to reflect on their experience either privately or by sharing with the group if they are comfortable doing so. The seminars involve only knitting practice, without physical exercise.
Session 3 - FUTURE – Strengthening & Deepening This session will challenge our skills through exploring color-work, adding depth to any knowledge that we may have already gained. Three different techniques of varying complexity will be examined, participants will be invited to work at whichever level they feel most comfortable.
Materials: Two, part ball of different colored medium weight yarn, yarn appropriate needles .
Homework: Cast on 24 stitches and work a few rows in St st. Leave stitches live on needle for class.
FIona Ellis - After pursuing a sensible career in laboratory work for textile production and colour cosmetic formulation, Fiona escaped from career-captivity in the early 1990’s to pursue fashion design at De Montfort University. She graduated with a degree specializing in Knitwear design. Fiona then founded her independent design business, selling designs to major fashion houses in New York, Paris and London. Her contacts in New York helped her to add design for the independent knitter to her repertoire. This led to her published patterns in major print and on-line magazines, and two successful books published by Random House. Fiona helps people escape from the mundane and bring creative design sensibilities to their knitting. She has 230 patterns on Ravelry. Fiona is also a certified yoga instructor.
