FAQ's about String Theory's Annual Mystery Knitalong

String Theory has hosted an annual Mystery Knitalong every year for over 15 years. If you haven't done one before, you might have questions.

We have answers!

What is a Mystery knitalong?
Our annual Mystery Knitalong is possibly our most popular event of the year.  Thousands of people across the country participated in our adventure.

Starting in June, we will email you a piece of a pattern, including pictures and helpful hints. At the end of four weeks, you will have all the pieces of the puzzle, new skills, new friends, and a lovely knitted …. something.

Since we don't know what we are making, would you pick out my yarn for me?

Yes! We know that the hardest part about the Mystery Knitalong is picking out your yarn. Every year we offer kits, with everything you will need. We even give you color options. Kits are usually available for preorder in March. Sign up here if you want to be the first to know.

I'd like to use up my stash yarn. Can I still participate?
Yes! In May, you can sign up for a "Clues Only" version of the knitalong. We will let you know exactly what yarn you'll need and sign you up to receive the clues, tutorials, and video chats each week.

Will this be too hard for me?
Working on a mystery project can be challenging, but we don't want it to be frustrating. That's why every clue comes with tips, tutorials, and a live Zoom call where you can get your questions answered.

The projects we pick are easy enough for adventurous beginners but interesting enough for more advanced knitters.

This is not for you If you have just learned to knit. Not knowing what you are making, makes the easiest project a bit more challenging.

What if I fall behind?
We do our best to create clues that are doable in a week. However, it’s OK if you aren’t “keeping up”. The pattern is yours after the knitalong ends, and you can take as much - or as little - time to knit it as you want.

What if I don't like what I make?
You are right, since you don't know what you are making, it is possible that you won't like the end result. In that case, you will have new knitting friends, new skills, and a gift ready for someone special.

Let us know in the comments if there is something else you would like to know.
