Meet the Maker: Snug and Spun Fiber Co

We absolutely love it when we get to introduce our community to new yarn - That's why we're so excited to host our very first trunk show with Snug and Spun Fiber co (formerly Knitting Lizard). We're in love with Liz's eye for softly variegated yarns - Her yarn is only here through November 22, so be sure to shop her trunk show early for the best selection! Get to know a little more about Snug and Spun Fiber Co below!

How did you get into dyeing? Tell us your story, and where you're located!

I was looking for a specific pink for a Satellite shawl and couldn't find it. So I dyed it up with avocado pits and peels. From there I experimented with black walnut husks and indigo before settling into Acid Dyes. I started out dyeing tonals on minis and then had so many I needed to sell them, and that started the business. I'm located in Saint Paul, MN.

What is your favorite part of the process?

My favorite part of the process is probably creating my mood boards and brainstorming my initial color recipes. I have a wall of color samples on mini skeins and its a great way for me to start thinking of color mixtures.

Where do you get your inspiration for colors?

I usually get color inspirations from media - books, tv shows, movies. But sometimes inspiration just hits me out of nowhere.

How do you come up with names for the colors?

I'm pretty boring when it comes to naming colorways. Usually they are connected to the colorway inspiration in some manner.

Which color best reflects your personality and why?

I'd say a light blue with hints of green. Calm and chill, but with a little bit of a surprise every now and then.

Tell us about a WIP or a project in your queue that you're really excited about! Which of your yarns would you recommend for this (or these) project(s)?

I'm really enjoying my Velvet Mirror cowl. I'm using a silk merino blend sock yarn, but my Merino Twist Sock or NSW Silk Sock would work great for this project. There is just something about a colorwork cowl where you knit a tube and graft the ends together that I find very satisfying. Next on my list is the Ooey Gooey cowl, I'll probably use my Corriedale Sport and Suri Cash Lace for that one.

Of what you are sending us, what are your favorite colors or color combinations?

I absolutely love all the colors I'm sending you, but my favorites would be Tin Man, Dewdrops, Mountain Fog, and Typewriter. Dewdrops and Mountain Fog have been featured together in a few projects I've made this year.

What is your best knitting or crocheting tip?

Go up a needle size when knitting small circumference items - for example use one size bigger needle for your sweater sleeves than you used for the body of your sweater.

What are two interesting things about you that aren’t fiber related?

I graduated with a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering and lived most of my life in the South.

If you didn’t dye yarn, what would be your dream job?

'm not sure, I have a day job outside of dyeing yarn as a Project Manager in tech and that's pretty solid.

What is the best advice you've ever received?

Make sure to schedule time for yourself to sit and do nothing every once in a while.

Share with us one great thing you're either listening to or watching right now (audiobook/podcast/show/etc) - we love recommendations for what to check out while we're knitting!

I just finished watching both seasons of Andor and I'm starting the next season of Foundation. Andor was hard to knit through, so much was going on!
