Behind the Scenes with Lavender Lune - String Theory Yarn Co

Behind the Scenes with Lavender Lune

Meet Sam, the artist behind Lavender Lune yarns. She's a homeschooling mom raising four amazing kids in the forests of northern Minnesota is the artist behind Lavender Lune. Her surroundings inspire her rich, vivid colors.
What is your favorite part about dyeing yarn?
Layering colors. I'm known for lots of layers and the nuances that come from layering color upon color.  Not all my colorways are like that, but those are my favorite!

What is the ugliest color you’ve dyed and why didn’t it work?
Funny enough I think most new colors are the ugliest colors I've ever created. I usually need a couple days for the yarn to dry, I skein it and then leave it out for me to look at until one day I suddenly love it! It's a process for sure.

What advice do you have about combining colors in, for example, a two-color shawl?
Complimentary tones are best, but they can be a pretty soft pink and a deep evergreen. Primary tones are too in your face, take shades of those primary tone.  Also choose a light and a dark shade, although don't get me wrong....I do love low contrast. Ultimately trust your heart and pick what makes you most happy!

What are two interesting things about you that aren’t fiber-related?
I also work as a home birth assistant and am home every day with 4 kids. 2 do online school and 2 are homeschooled.

If you didn’t dye yarn, what would you do?
I would be a midwife. I actually started my midwifery training at the same time I started my yarn business. We see how that went!
What is your best knitting tip?
Don't be afraid, it's just knitting!

THIS OR THAT?

  1. Knit or crochet? Knit (although I also ran a crochet business once upon a time)
  2. Starting a project or finishing a project? Starting a project (by WIPS are insane!)
  3. DPNs or magic loop? Magic Loop, never really got the hang of DPN's.
  4. Fix the mistake or live with the mistake? Fix, Fix, Fix. Although I'm starting to learn to let it go.
  5. Fingering weight or super bulky? Fingering weight, although I dye the BEST bulky!
  6. Lace or cables? Cables make my heart flutter.
  7. Socks or sweaters? Sweaters, I've never been a sock knitter.
  8. Netflix or audiobooks (while crafting)? Podcasts while I'm dying yarn (can't get enough of True Crime) and Netflix while I knit.
