Twig
from JUL: I looked for this twig for weeks during dog-walks in the morning before starting work in the studio. Each day I collected handfuls of different sized and shaped twigs from different trees and shrubs until I found two I liked, this one which became the Twig Shawl Stick, and another one that became the Twig Lace Pin. I cast these botanical components myself in silver. I then shaped the wavy shaft of the shawl stick in silver wire and soldered them together to form the entire piece.
Straight Pin, Salt Spoon and Fork
The beauty of these simple shawl sticks is the sheer quantity of styling real estate that they have the capacity to control. What other styling tool controls a full four inches of knitwear with one simple tool?
The trick with shawl sticks is to thread them in and out of the knitwear so that the wiggles we design into these tools can do their job - of grabbing onto the fabric and holding your styling in place through tension and friction.
Octopus
4.5"x1.5"
This shawl stick was inspired by the Netflix documentary - My Octopus Teacher, which is so fabulous and inspiring I hope you will watch it.
This documentary shows us just how incredibly interesting Octopuses are and gives us a picture of the possibilities for relationships with creatures we would never imagine can become engaged with humans in profound ways.
Dragonfly
4.5"x2"
JUL didn't want the ornament to be top-heavy so rather than have the stick extend from the end of Dragonfly's abdomen, the stick is attached to the Dragonfly's head. So the stick runs underneath the Dragonfly's body, with a space between the two into which the knitwear nests, creating an incredibly stable and beautiful effect. The Dragonfly appears to have alighted delicately on the knitwear.
Hummingbird
4.5"x2"
The Filigree Hummingbird, like the Filigree Dragonfly, has a stick that extends up to the top of the ornament, creating a space behind the body of the bird that accommodates the knitwear, making this stick particularly secure and balanced in how it sits on top of your knitted garments and accessories. The weight balance created by this unique design means the Filigree Hummingbird remains feasible even for very light-weight knits. Weighing only slightly more than half an ounce, the Filigree Hummingbird, indeed, is as delicate as a Hummingbird.
