Sister Ananse Pollinator Collection: Fingering Weight
For National Pollinator Week, we asked Naima Bond for colors inspired by pollinators. A bumblebee, we thought. A monarch, maybe. She sent back nine incredible colors inspired by orchid bees and a copper sunbird, a ruby-throated hummingbird and a lorikeet, a painted lady, a monarch, a flying fox, an elephant hawk moth.
Pollinators do quiet, essential work; roughly a third of what we eat depends on them. With this collection, we hope to increase awareness of their importance.
Naima dyes as Sister Ananse, in Chicago, painting with dye the way she trained to paint with everything else — Oberlin, then the School of the Art Institute. You'll find this collection only at String Theory.
It's her Zebra base: black and white plied together, then dyed over the top. The black stays black, so worked up the color turns subtler and deeper than the skein lets on. Naima layers so many colors into each one that no two skeins match — yours is yours.
At 400 yards to the skein, a single skein goes a long way — a shawl, a hat, the long color run of a striped cowl. Let it work in plain stitches, stockinette, garter, eyelets, where the color can do the talking. It also shines striped with a semi-solid or saved for a shawl's edge.
