Meet the Maker - Michele Diprima

How did you get into dyeing?

So, I fell down that rabbit hole of dyeing because I was a spinner that’s all I loved to do, I spun morning, noon and night! Spinning yarn was my yoga and it became my healer. Going through a deep depression form losing somebody very close to me, I needed an outlet for that pain and spinning truly became that outlet. But I had a hard time keeping up with the demand so that’s when I brought on mill spun yarns and I started, hand dyeing my own yarn. I loved playing with bright crazy colors! Eight years later, here I am running a full-blown business of hand dyed yarn. Learning how to spin truly opened a whole new world for me!

What is your favorite part of the process?

I think my favorite part of the process is taking those yarns out of my cookers and seeing how all the colors just meshed in harmony.

Where do you get your inspiration for colors?

I get inspired from everything around me. That’s why I love going for long walks and looking at nature, signs, going into bookstores and looking at book covers, you name it. Then I see something and figure out how can I put my wild and crazy spin on that.

How do you come up with names for the colors?

I started naming my colorways with my daughter when she was little. We love everything that has to do with Halloween, witches, fairies and unicorns. So now that she’s older, and I’m doing it alone I’m keeping our tradition and going with anything witchy and Halloweenie!!

Which color best reflects your personality?

I think the color that best reflects my personality is Tiger’s Eye. I’m a head strong Leo, who loves to wear black with a pop of color born under the Sun Sign.

What is the ugliest color you’ve dyed and why didn’t it work?

Well I find that there really is no ugly color. Something that I dye which doesn’t turn out like I would like and I’m not crazy about someone else loves and finds beautiful.

Of what you are sending us, what are your favorite colors or color combinations?

I love everything that I’m sending you but I think my true favorites are the speckled yarns with tons of color pops.

What advice do you have about combining colors in, for example, a two-color shawl?

When you find yourself unsure about your color combo, I usually like to twist two skeins together to figure out if those colors will work. That will give you a little idea of what you’re working with.

What is your best knitting tip?

Stitch makers, stitch markers, stitch markers!!!

What are two interesting things about you that aren’t fiber related?

I’m a cat eye glasses wearing Witch, who loves working with the phases of the moon and long walks in the forest.

If you didn’t dye yarn, what would you do?

Oh boy, I guess maybe owning a farm with goats and chickens. But really, I don’t know where or what I would be without dyeing yarn. Sometimes I wonder if keeping this up is worth it. Running a business on my own is very hard but I couldn’t imagine my life without doing what I do.

Living in the same state as Michelle, I’ve seen her at yarn events several times. She’s delightful and fun to talk to! And I love her yarn! She comes up with such unique and fun color combinations!
