Meet the Maker: Holly Dyeworks

Meet the Maker: Holly Dyeworks

by Emily

Just in time for the holiday season, we've scheduled a fabulous trunk show with Holly Dyeworks, who has sent us a bundle of festive fingering-weight yarns just perfect for seasonal gifts. Trust me, you'll want to get your hands on some of these gorgeous tonal hues ASAP (check out those Nutcracker mini sets!) in store or online through November 23. In the meantime, get to know Eve from Holly Dyeworks below.

How did you get into dyeing? Tell us your story, and where you're located!

I grew up in East Tennessee, around Chattanooga, in a homeschool and very artsy family. Now I live in Huntsville, Alabama with my husband and three kids. Between homeschooling and directing theater, I play with yarn!
What is your favorite part of the process?

My favorite part of my business is planning out yarn collections and what colors to use for each one. I believe in storytelling through color.
Where do you get your inspiration for colors?

Most of my inspiration comes from literature and places I visited. Nature never fails to inspire too.
How do you come up with names for the colors?

The names of my colorways come from the books I’ve read and place names I’ve been to over the years.
Which color best reflects your personality and why?

Purple and teal are my favorite colors and tend to reflect the depth of my thoughts and artistic spirit.
Tell us about a WIP or a project in your queue that you're really excited about! Which of your yarns would you recommend for this (or these) project(s)?

Gardengate by Jennifer Steingass Has been in my queue for a couple of years now and I’m determined to get it done in 2025! I am torn between using Katrina Van Tassel and Sleepy Hollow from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Collection or Mouse King and The Nutcracker Prince from the new Nutcracker Collection.
Of what you are sending us, what are your favorite colors or color combinations?

I tried to send you a wide assortment of colorways so there would be something for everyone. I included the Sleepy Hollow Collection, Anne of Avonlea Collection, Pride & Prejudice Collection, and the Nutcracker and Mouse King Collections. It is hard to pick a favorite, but I am very partial to the pride and prejudice and Anne of Avonlea collections.
What is your best knitting or crocheting tip?

I always recommend having three projects going at a time: the easy/mindless one, the challenging one, and the fun one. You want to have a project that you can do while talking or watching, one to stretch your skills, and a project that you have a passion for.
What are two interesting things about you that aren’t fiber related?

Two fun facts about myself are: My father and husband are both Lutheran pastors, so I am a PK and pastor’s wife. And I majored in musical theater in college and worked as a professional costumer for a spell. Outside of my passion for handcrafts my faith and the performing arts are my great loves.
If you didn’t dye yarn, what would be your dream job?

If I could have any other job, I’d love to be the artistic director for a theater!
What is the best advice you've ever received?

Create out of a sense of joy!
Share with us one great thing you're either listening to or watching right now (audiobook/podcast/show/etc) - we love recommendations for what to check out while we're knitting!

I just finished Moonflower Murdera on PBS and Agatha Christie‘s Halloween Party on Audible. The British murder mystery is my favorite for knitting and dyeing!
